Canada geese and ducks are among the most persistent birds Flock Free deals with, and the damage they do is mostly a volume problem. A single adult goose produces roughly four pounds of droppings a day, which is why a small resident flock can make a lawn, a shoreline or a walkway unusable within weeks. They are also strongly territorial around nests, and geese defending a nest can be genuinely intimidating to staff and visitors.

Why Geese and Ducks Become a Problem

Geese are grazing birds. They want short grass close to open water with a clear line of sight, which is an almost exact description of a corporate lawn, a golf course, a park, a school field or a retention pond. Once a site meets those conditions, geese will use it, and if they raise young there successfully they will return.

• Droppings, in quantity. Roughly four pounds per adult bird per day. This is what makes lawns, paths, docks and parking areas unusable rather than merely untidy.
• Aggression around nests. Geese defend nests and goslings assertively, which becomes a safety and liability question where the public walk.
• Disease and parasites. Geese and ducks carry and spread a range of them, which matters most around water, food service and play areas.
• Persistence. They are difficult to move on once established, and a site cleared without changing the conditions will simply be reoccupied.

Where Geese and Ducks Settle

• Open mown grass beside water — corporate campuses, parks, golf courses, school grounds.
• Ponds, lakes and retention basins, including the banks and shallow margins.
• Flat rooftops on commercial buildings, which geese sometimes use for nesting.
• Shorelines, docks and marina decking.
• Agricultural ground, where grazing turns into crop damage.

Why geese keep coming back

Geese are strongly site-faithful. A flock that has fed and raised young somewhere treats it as home ground and will test it repeatedly. That is why single interventions rarely settle the matter, and why the methods below are designed to be run together and kept up rather than applied once.

How to Control Geese and Ducks

LED-light deterrents

Our LED-light geese deterrents are the products named specifically for this species. They work on the birds’ reluctance to settle where they perceive movement and disturbance at ground or water level, and they are supplied in three versions so the unit matches the site: Residential for domestic and smaller managed lawns, Industrial for larger commercial grass areas, and a Water version that floats for ponds, lakes and basins.

Match the unit to the surface the birds are actually using. Geese that are loafing on water need the water unit; geese grazing the lawn need a land unit.

Bird repellent applied by hazer, misting or sprayer

The Flock Free bird repellent is the method that treats an area rather than a single surface, and it is particularly well suited to geese. Our own field guidance notes that hazer treatment works especially well on geese and ducks because of their large lung capacity. It is a plant-based formulation, exempt under FIFRA 25(b).

Applied as a program rather than a one-off: preparation and first treatment, reapplication over the following two weeks, then ongoing monthly maintenance. For geese the practical choices are the Bird Repellent Kit or the 1 gallon concentrate, applied through a portable Moby hazer, a fixed Tweet Zilla, a Misting System, or handheld sprayers on smaller sites.

Flock Off UV Paint

Flock Off UV Paint is clear to the human eye but visible to birds. Used alongside the repellent program it gives the birds a visual marker to associate with the treated area, which is how the deterrent effect is reinforced rather than simply repeated.

Choosing the Right Approach

With geese, the first thing to establish is simply where they are spending their time. Birds loafing out on the water need the floating unit; birds grazing the lawn need a land unit. Plenty of sites have both going on at once, and treating only half of it is why people tell us the deterrent "stopped working" after a week.

The next question is what they are doing. Geese passing through to graze are far easier to move than a pair sitting on a nest, and once there are goslings on the ground you are dealing with defensive birds and a different set of timing considerations.

Then there is the size of the area, which is usually what decides how the repellent gets applied. A modest lawn can be covered with handheld sprayers. A campus, a golf course or a shoreline cannot, which is exactly why hazers and misting systems exist. And if the public are walking through the site, the aggression risk deserves as much weight as the mess does.
