Water draws birds in and keeps them there. Docks, marinas, boat covers, ponds, retention areas and pool surrounds give gulls and waterfowl drinking water, bathing water and a clear view of their surroundings, and the fouling that follows lands on decks, boats, furniture and walkways.

Working around water narrows the options. There is usually little to exclude birds from, surfaces are wet a good deal of the time, and what you apply matters. The methods below treat the structures and the air around the water rather than the water itself.

Bird Repellent Spray — Hand Spray

Applied to the structures around the water — dock boards, rails, pilings, posts and furniture — rather than to the water. Flock Free Bird Repellent dries clear and works as a visual, scent and taste deterrent. For use around children and pets. Use as directed.

Seagull Effigy

Gulls watch each other constantly for signs of food and danger. An effigy of a dead gull reads as a danger signal and moves birds off the area — which is why it is the visual deterrent Flock Free lists for docks, boats and pools.

Bird Netting

Netting stretched over water denies access from above. Flock Free netting is specified for architectural, aqua-cultural and agricultural exclusion, and the 3/4 inch mesh excludes all but the smallest birds.

Bird Netting High Tensile Black 3/4" Mesh 50' x 50'

$755.00

3/4 inch mesh, 50 ft by 50 ft, black. 12-ply UV-resistant HDPE with a 75 lb knotted breaking strength and steam-set knots.

Netting needs a perimeter of tensioned cable and anchors to work properly. The brackets, cable, clips, rings and turnbuckles are in the full netting range. For sizing over a pond or a covered slip, call the office on 732-987-5400.

Bird Repellent Spray — Hazers

A hazer disperses the repellent as an invisible haze over an area, which suits open water frontage where there is no surface to treat. The Moby is the unit Flock Free lists for docks and marinas specifically.

Choosing a Starting Point

For a pond you want to protect outright, netting over the top is the method that physically works. For a dock, marina or pool surround where netting is not practical, a hazer plus the Seagull Effigy is the usual combination, with the repellent spray on the rails and boards.
