Sparrow Control

Sparrows are small, adaptable and almost omnivorous, and that combination makes them one of the most stubborn birds to move off a site. They are strongly attached to a location once they have settled, and they rebuild fast — remove a nest and it can be back in the same place within a day. Our own guidance does not soften this: sustained pressure on a sparrow population can take years rather than weeks, and none of it holds if the birds still have easy access to food.

Why Sparrows Become a Problem

• They nest inside the building fabric. Sparrows use vents, soffits, roof voids and the cavities behind signage, which puts nesting material where it blocks airflow and drainage.
• They rebuild immediately. Nest removal on its own achieves very little; the same site is reoccupied within a day if the opening is still there.
• Food keeps them. They will eat almost anything, so food premises, waste areas, feed stores and agricultural sites hold them indefinitely.
• Droppings in occupied areas. Because they nest close to people, the fouling tends to land on entrances, walkways and stock rather than out of sight.

Where Sparrows Roost and Nest

• Vents, soffits and roof voids — any gap that opens into a sheltered cavity.
• Behind illuminated signage, one of the most common sparrow nest sites we are called to.
• Under canopies and awnings, on the beams and ledges beneath them.
• Narrow sills and small ledges that larger birds cannot use.
• Around feed stores, food service and waste points.

Why sparrows keep coming back

Because the two things holding them are usually untouched: an opening and a food supply. A sparrow program that closes gaps and cuts off food will make progress. One that only treats surfaces will move the birds a few feet and no further.

How to Control Sparrows

Block access to food first

This is the part people skip. Our guidance is direct about it — nothing else will work if the birds still have food. Bins, spillage, feed stores, open waste and outdoor food service all need dealing with alongside anything fitted to the building.

Close the openings

Exclusion does the heavy lifting. Close entry holes and voids with mesh, and close the space under canopies with netting. Our Store Sign Copper Mesh is intended for signage cavities, and bird netting closes larger open structures. For small birds, ask us about the right mesh specification for the gap you are closing rather than assuming a pigeon-sized mesh will exclude them.

Use the smallest spikes, correctly spaced

Our guidance calls out a very common mistake: fitting spikes that are too large. Sparrows simply land between them. Use Mini Spikes, 1″ wide and make sure the birds cannot find a landing gap anywhere across the ledge.

Bird repellent, timed around the nesting season

The Flock Free repellent is plant-based, exempt under FIFRA 25(b). For sparrows the timing matters: our guidance is to treat surfaces with handheld sprayers before the nesting season, then maintain weekly or more frequent treatment through it using the Misting System, hazers or sprayers. The Ready-to-Use spray suits small areas; the 1 gallon concentrate suits repeat treatment at volume.

Bird Bombs — spot treatment for enclosed spaces

Flock Free Bird Bombs are a scent repellent that gives you a long-lasting spot application. Each Bird Bomb is a highly absorbent pod designed to be saturated with Flock Free Bird Repellent, so the treatment stays put instead of needing to be re-sprayed.

Soak the Bird Bomb in the repellent solution — the mix rate is 50% concentrate to 50% water — then place it wherever you need to deter birds. They mount easily with zip ties or any other fastener.

They are designed for small, enclosed spaces: garbage cans, dumpsters, warehouses and small industrial facilities. On a sparrow job that usually means the feed store, the trash enclosure or an outbuilding — the enclosed spots where the birds keep feeding. The Bird Bombs cause irritation that suppresses the birds’ desire to feed and creates a sense of danger in that space.

The 5-pack is supplied on its own and needs Flock Free Bird Repellent separately. The Bird Bomb Bundle includes a single Bird Bomb with a 4 fl oz bottle of concentrate to soak it in.

Choosing the Right Approach

Sparrow work comes down to two things, and neither of them is a product. Is there a way in, and is there something to eat? Close the opening and cut off the food, and the rest of this page starts working. Skip either one and you will be treating surfaces for years.

Once that is dealt with, the ledge tells you what to fit. Narrow sills and small ledges need the smallest spike gauge we make, spaced tightly enough that a sparrow cannot drop in between — oversized spikes are the classic error on this species, and the birds simply perch in the gaps. Where a spike strip will not sit cleanly, Surface Pro Tack does the same job without the hardware.

Shade matters too. The gel and UV paint pairing belongs on horizontal surfaces out of direct sun, not on an exposed parapet.

Finally, think about timing. Treating before the nesting season is far more effective than reacting once nests are being built, and sparrows will test you for a long time — our own guidance talks in years, not weeks.
