Open ground is the hardest place to move birds, because there is nothing to exclude them from. A ledge can be spiked and an opening can be netted, but a yard, a field, a car park or a flat roof has no edge to work with. Birds simply land somewhere else on the same site.
What works in the open is pressure — treating the area so that it is consistently unpleasant, and keeping that pressure on until the birds decide to go elsewhere. That means scent and taste deterrents applied across an area rather than along a line, backed up by visual cues.
Below are the Flock Free products we recommend for open areas, grouped by method.
Bird Repellent Spray — Hand Spray
Flock Free Bird Repellent is a visual, scent and taste deterrent that dries clear. It can be sprayed on trees, bushes, buildings, pipes and beams. Apply once a week for three to four weeks, then monthly as needed — the goal is constant pressure rather than a single treatment. For use around children and pets. Use as directed.

$99.00
32 oz concentrate, making up to 16 gallons of ready product. Professional strength.
Flock Free Bird Repellent Concentrate, 1 gallon
$395.00
1 gallon concentrate. Dilute and apply with any sprayer to structures, pipes and beams. For larger open areas.
For areas that are difficult to reach from the ground, the repellent can be applied with a backpack sprayer and telescopic wand rather than a ladder.
Backpack Sprayer 5 Gallon and XL Wand
$1230.00
5 gallon backpack sprayer with a telescopic fibreglass XL wand adjustable from 5 ft to 26 ft.
Surface Pro Tack and UV Paint
Where an open area still has surfaces birds settle on — fence tops, beams, pipes, equipment — Surface Pro Tack gives them a tacky finish birds will not stand on. Flock Free recommends applying a coat of UV paint first, then the tack, then spraying the repellent over the top weekly for three to four weeks.
Surface Pro Tack – Liquid Spikes - Surface Protector - 1 gallon
$202.00
1 gallon, covering 400 square feet. Brush, roll or spray in three coats. Apply UV paint first.
Surface Pro Tack – Liquid Spikes - Surface Protector - 4 fl.oz.
$24.99
4 fl oz for spot work and smaller runs. Dries to a tacky finish with a slight sheen.
Surface Pro Tack needs a clean, dry surface above 40°F to apply. It may temporarily lose some tackiness when wet or below 10°F, recovering once the surface dries and the temperature rises.
Effigy Products
An effigy imitates a dead bird of the same species. Birds reading it as a danger signal will avoid the area, which makes effigies useful over open ground where there is nothing to attach a physical deterrent to.
Vulture Effigy
$119.00
For vultures. Hang wherever vultures are gathering — land, poles or towers. Moves in light wind. Hanging hardware not included.
Bird Repellent Spray — Hazers
A hazer disperses the repellent as an invisible haze across an area, rather than onto a surface. That is what makes it the open-area tool: it treats the air over a yard, a dining area or a rooftop continuously and without anyone having to spray. Every hazer needs a fluid, listed underneath.
Moby - Portable Hazer
$3249.00
The compact, portable unit. Indoor or outdoor. Suits pools, patios, food courts, boat docks, marinas and rooftops. Keep a 6 ft gap from walls and overhead obstructions.
Tweet Zilla - Hazer
$4899.00
Fixed indoor or outdoor install with a light haze and silent operation. Suits populated areas. Minimum install height 6 ft indoors, 8 ft outdoors.
Mini Solar Hazer
$2525.00
Solar powered, for outdoor locations with no mains supply. Programmable timer, 1 gallon capacity, weatherproof.
Hazer fluids. A hazer will not run without one of these.
ECObird 4.0 - 1 Gallon
$249.00
1 gallon of oil-based methyl anthranilate, the active ingredient in the haze.
Choosing a Starting Point
For a one-off or a small yard, start with the ready-to-use spray. For a site you need to hold long term, a hazer does the work continuously and costs less to run than repeated manual spraying. Effigies work best alongside one of the other two rather than on their own, and Surface Pro Tack handles whatever hard surfaces remain.
